The Barat is the groom's wedding procession as he arrives at the wedding venue with his family and friends.

Meaning

It symbolizes celebration, joy, and the groom's journey toward beginning a new chapter of life with the bride.

What To Expect

Expect music, dancing, dhol and tasha beats, and festive energy. Guests are warmly encouraged to join the procession, dance, clap, and enjoy the celebration.

The bride's family traditionally welcomes the groom and his family with warmth, blessings, and aarti upon arrival.

Family Welcome

Traditionally, the groom and his family are welcomed by the bride's family upon arrival.

This ritual signifies respect, hospitality, and the joining of two families.

Ancestral Blessings

Kuladevata Pujan

The wedding ceremonies begin with prayers to the family deity, Kuldevta or Kuldevi.

Meaning

This ritual seeks blessings from the family's ancestral deity for happiness, prosperity, and a blessed married life.

Auspicious Beginning

Ganesh Pujan

The bride and groom pray to Lord Ganesha before entering married life.

Meaning

Lord Ganesha is worshipped to remove obstacles and ensure the wedding ceremony proceeds smoothly with peace and positivity.

Holy Verses

Mangalashtaka

These sacred verses from scripture are recited to seek God's blessings for happiness, peace, prosperity, and lifelong companionship for the couple.

What To Expect

At the end of each verse, guests traditionally shower the couple with unbroken rice grains colored with sacred red powder, called Akshata, or with flower petals. The priest calls "Savadhan," inviting everyone to be attentive to the sacred moment.

The gesture symbolizes wishes for a strong, everlasting relationship and a long, happy life together. After the recitation, the bride and groom exchange garlands, known as Jaimala, marking their acceptance of one another.

We invite all guests to join in by showering petals and blessing the couple for their joyful future together.

Family Blessing

Kanyadaan

In this deeply emotional ritual, the bride's father formally offers his daughter's hand to the groom.

Meaning

The father prays for the couple's happiness and seeks divine blessings for their future family and generations to come.

At the end of the ritual, holy water is sprinkled on the couple for peace, health, prosperity, and harmony in married life.

Sacred Thread

Kankan Bandhan

A sacred cotton thread is ceremonially tied around the bride and groom.

Meaning

This ritual symbolizes protection, commitment, and the binding together of the couple for a lifetime of companionship and support.

Sacred Necklace

Mangalsutra Bandhan

The groom ties the Mangalsutra around the bride's neck.

Meaning

The necklace traditionally contains black and gold beads symbolizing protection, prosperity, and the sacred bond of marriage. The three strings represent divine energies of creation, protection, and transformation.

Partnership

The two gold pendants in the center symbolize two individuals becoming one united partnership.

While tying the Mangalsutra, the groom prays for a long, healthy, and blessed married life together.

Sacred Fire

Vivah Homa

The wedding fire, Agni, is considered the divine witness to the marriage.

Meaning

During this ritual, the groom formally accepts the bride's hand and promises companionship, prosperity, and support throughout life. Together, the couple offers prayers and puffed rice into the sacred fire.

A lighthearted family tradition follows in which the bride's brother gently twists the groom's ear, reminding him to always care for and cherish his sister.

Laja Homa

The bride offers puffed rice, called Laja, into the sacred fire with the groom's support.

Meaning

This ritual symbolizes nourishment, prosperity, gratitude, and mutual support in married life.

Seven Sacred Steps

Saptapadi

The bride and groom take seven sacred steps together around the fire. Each step represents a promise and prayer for married life, including nourishment, strength, prosperity, happiness, family, harmony, and lifelong friendship.

This concluding ritual blesses the couple's new household and married life together.
